Thara Srinivasan is a scientist who has most recently engaged in ecology and environmental policy research.  She is very interested in the geographic patterns underlying humanity’s relationship to nature’s services, and the responsibility of the world’s citizens for paying for and stopping ecological degradation.  Her work seeks to shed light on the geographic mismatch, where it exists, between peoples suffering from ecological harm and those consumers of the goods or services derived from such environmental change.  She has also focused on spatial patterns of species richness, in particular how species’ diets within their food webs are related to their success or extinction across landscapes.  In addition, she is currently interested in the interface between ecology and education, in how to effectively communicate the interconnectedness, beauty, and fragility of nature in curricula, and also how a deeper understanding of nature’s services and the plight of biodiversity can enrich the lives of schoolchildren.
